Player Expectations

The “K” Way

At Kentwood High School Football, our team culture is grounded in our unwavering values of Decision to Dominate (DTD), Commitment, Leadership, Growth, and the integral 959 concept. We passionately believe in the transformative power of football, which goes beyond the game itself.

Our ethos is to consistently instill behaviors such as exemplary work ethic, unyielding grit, responsible citizenship, effective communication, and fierce competitiveness within our athletes. These are not just qualities we aspire to demonstrate on the field, but life skills we endeavor to foster for the long haul.

Our guiding mantra, “Win for Life,” encapsulates our philosophy that winning extends far beyond the scoreboard. It’s about winning in the classroom, in relationships, in character development, and in one’s future career. We’re committed to developing not just strong athletes, but strong individuals.

We subscribe to the belief that our thoughts inspire our words, and our words drive our actions. This cycle, constantly revolving, promotes continuous growth and self-improvement, while leaving space for new goals and aspirations.

Each season, our players are empowered to set their own team goals. This cultivates a culture of collective responsibility, deepens their commitment to personal development, and enhances their leadership skills.

In our journey to “Win for Life,” we strive to create a football culture that nurtures growth, instills resilience, and shapes leaders – a culture that truly embodies the spirit of Conk Nation. Together, we aim to dominate, not just the game, but life.

Player Expectations:

This philosophy isn’t just what we as a team strive for, but it forms the very expectations we have for each individual player on and off the field, including their academic endeavors.

Each player is expected to internalize and embody our values – Decision to Dominate, Commitment, Leadership, Growth, and 959 – in every aspect of their life. This includes training sessions, games, interactions with others, and importantly, their commitment to excellence in the classroom.

Our athletes are not just players; they’re student-athletes. We expect them to show the same dedication and commitment in their studies as they do on the field. Achieving good grades, engaging with class materials, and being a positive influence in the classroom are key to being a part of our team.

Players are also expected to demonstrate strong work ethic, resilience, citizenship, effective communication, and competitiveness, both on the field and in the academic sphere.

Each season, players actively participate in setting team goals. This responsibility fosters ownership over both individual and team successes and encourages personal and academic growth.

But above all, we expect our athletes to embrace the mantra of “Win for Life”. This means applying the skills and lessons learned through football and academic endeavors to every facet of their lives. It represents the commitment to personal growth, leadership, and the determination to continuously strive for improvement.

By fulfilling these expectations, our student-athletes contribute to a team culture that values success on the field and in the classroom. This commitment to academic and athletic excellence is the Conk Nation way.
